SURPRISE 90th birthday celebration for Coleshill Market founder, Christine Jones

IMG_1222 IMG_1225 IMG_1229 Mum at Market
Coleshill Country Market has staged a surprise 90th birthday celebration for longstanding Market Treasurer Christine Jones. Scores of loyal customers, fellow-marketeers, friends and family packed in to enjoy bubbly and cake (home-baked of course) and wish a happy birthday to Mrs Jones, the only one of the original founders from when the Market was launched (as Coleshill WI Market) in 1969, still helping to run it. Market producer and expert gardener Martin Cross presented her with a glorious flower arrangement and a rich fruitcake iced by Deanna Baker and baked by Joan Pickworth who joined the market a few months after its launch.
“Christine has been a wonderful organiser at the Market for nearly 50 years,” said Mr Cross. “She still bakes lots of goodies for it each week and is famous for her prize-winning marmalade, quiches, shortbreads, chocolate roulades and lemon drizzle cakes. She’s always enjoyed encouraging new producers and customers too because this is a great social hub and our regulars enjoy having a cuppa and a chat while they make their purchases.”
“I was amazed and really touched that so many people came in to celebrate my big birthday,” said Mrs Jones who is also a former President of Coleshill WI. “All our regulars, our market producers, old friends like the former Coleshill mayor Sue Wallace who’s a great supporter of ours and even the Chairman of the Warwickshire Country Markets, Erica Moody came along. Everyone was incredibly kind and made such a fuss of me, with dozens of cards and presents plus that gorgeous presentation. It was a great surprise as I’d planned to bring cake and drinks for everyone – but my market friends forestalled me and laid on a beautiful cake and wine of their own.
I’ve always enjoyed baking for the market and meeting the customers. Some have been coming all the time it’s been going, so there’s a great atmosphere. At the moment they’re buying lots of Christmas food and last-minute presents – hand-turned wooden pieces, glasswork, jewellery, plus some lovely knitted and crocheted baby clothes, adult pullovers, hats and gloves. Everyone seems to like our little hampers which customers fill with their own choice of cakes and preserves – my grandchildren are big fans of these!
I’d like to send a tremendous thankyou to everyone who was so kind as to come and make my  birthday so special.”
The final Coleshill Country Market of the year will be on Friday, December 22nd between 8am and noon in the Parish Room. The first one after Christmas will be on Friday, January 26th .
[Coleshill Country Market is at the Parish Room, 132 High Street, Coleshill, B46 3BJ every Friday morning from 8am to noon. Phone Christine Jones on 01675-462012 or Deanna Baker on 01675-463239 to place an order or if you’re interested in becoming a producer.]

CASPER – Local Backers Needed

The Coleshill Art Space Project – Everyone Respects

CASPER will recognise Coleshill’s place on the map with a representation of the town: a statue, sculpture, mural or some other art piece on a prominent location in the High Street.  Coleshill has a rich and long history to show: –

The Roman era; William the Conqueror & reference to the town as a Royal Manor in Doomsday Book (11th Century); King John & signing of the market charter (13th Century); Stagecoach /turnpike era and Jack O’Watton, the Highwayman; Famous names of Sumner (Typhoo Tea), Digby, Wingfield and Father Hudson; the circus elephant buried off Parkfield Road in 1910; Daniel Defoe’s 20th century comment – “a small but very handsome market-town”; the town with 3 rivers (Cole, Blythe and Tame) and current town twinning with Chassieu in France.

The Working Group has achieved much in the project to date:

  • We have £10,000+ pledged towards the total fund,
  • Sculptors have been or will be assisting with ‘in kind’ services,
  • A business sponsor, Certas Energy (the operator on the fuel station on the High Street),
  • An Working Group (comprising reps from the Town Council, Civic Society, Coleshill Post and parish church),
  • Voluntary organisations like the Masons Lodge, Love Coleshill, U3A and Ale Tasters all supporting the effort financially or in other ways,
  • Promises of assistance from 2 junior schools via the head teachers,
  • Land now made available at a peppercorn rent.

However, at the moment the project desperately needs:

Pledges of any value are needed ASAP for the project to continue.  Crowd funding target end date is 12/01/18.    www.spacehive.com/casper
